Nad Niemnem is a Positivist novel written by Eliza Orzeszkowa in 1888 during the foreign Partitions of Poland. [1] Its main purpose was to present the Polish society and its own internal dynamics as they were in mid–18th century, in reference to the Polish January Uprising against the Russian occupation.

They show struggles of people living in 19th century on former polish land which was at that point part of Russia. The adaptation was well-made, with the exception of long descriptions of nature which we can find in the book.
Considered Orzeszkowa’s masterpiece, Nad Niemnen (1888; “On the Banks of the Niemen,” filmed 1987) depicts Polish society in Lithuania.
